Phoebe Tam

Born in Hong Kong, Phoebe Tam started her vocal training whilst she was studying in the United Kingdom five years ago. After completing her secondary education there, she returned to Hong Kong and entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in vocal studies. In 2005, she obtained her Diploma in Performing Arts in music from the Academy and subsequently obtained her Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree in 2008 under the tutelage of the renowned Chinese soprano Katusha Tsui-Fraser. She is currently in the Professional Diploma programme.

Phoebe has been a winner of several music competitions in Hong Kong. She was recipient of the Peter and Nancy Thompson Scholarship, the Hong Kong Welsh Male Choir Scholarship and the Brenda and Lauren Scofield Scholarship Funds while studying at the Academy. Phoebe has been chosen to participate in a number of master classes hold by the Academy; the most recent one was the Juilliard International Master class Series hold by Edith Bers in 2007.

In 2008, Phoebe participated the summer programme organized by Bel Canto Institute of New York and under the coaching of Jane Klaviter, Robert Morrison and Gildo DiNuzio of the Metropolitan Opera, and Eva Hess Thaysen of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. She was also chosen to perform in the master class of Juan Pons.

Phoebe has participated in many concerts and opera productions in the Academy. In 2005, she performed the role Fransquinella in the Offenbach’s opera La Perichole. She has also been casted for the role of Sivene in the Academy opera, Le Cinesi, in 2007. In 2008, she sang the title role of Suor Angelica by Puccini in the Academy opera. She is casted as Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen and Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme in the 2009 Academy Opera Productions. Phoebe has also recently sang Second Spirit in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with Opera Hong Kong in November 2009 in Hong Kong and Beijing.

Phoebe Tam has also appeared as soloist in a number of concerts. She has sung ‘Mater Gloriosa’ in Mahler’s Symphony No.8 with the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006. In 2007, she has sung the soprano solo parts in Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise and Vivaldi’s Gloria in D with the Hong Kong Oratorio Society. She has also participated in Opera Hong Kong’s education concerts.

Phoebe is also a big fan of musicals and does not miss an opportunity to sing some of the famous songs or to watch them at the West End or on Broadway during her frequent trips to the UK and US. Phoebe is also the winner of The 2008 Yips Musical Singing Competition in HK.
